SPOTLIGHT on SUZANNE
Spectacular! WOW, like Fireworks!
My jewelry ’tis for thee… as brilliant, brightly colored, sparkling gemstones take front and center in my designs – their radiance as mesmerizing as fireworks on the 4th of July.
So include me as a “girl on fire” as I set stones from all over this land designing pieces that are literally lit up and crackling with energy – the sky’s the limit.
AN EXPLOSION OF COLORS & FORMS
Suzanne Brown Jewelry has more than spectacular in common with fireworks! Technically speaking, in the same way fireworks are hand-made by an individual, each of my designs are individually hand-made works of art. Plus more: each is hand-signed.
“Every one of the fireworks devices you see is handmade by an individual, there are no machine that make fireworks,” said Dale Nowak, a design representative with Pyrotechnic Display, Inc. He took WCCO-TV behind-the-scenes to a show in Plymouth, where six workers spent 10 hours setting up for a 20 minute show.”
In my studio in Scottsdale, I spend many hours behind-the-scenes creating stunning one-of-a-kind showpieces – pieces that last a lifetime longer than a 20-minute show. Plus more: on the frontline, I can be seen at the Celebration of Art exhibition demonstrating and discussing my process.
“…fireworks are a literal blast! Not only do they soar up into the sky and cause a multi-sensory experience with flashes of light in a rainbow of color, but fireworks can make a lot of sound as well! …fireworks sound can range from the bang-bang-bang of standard firecrackers to the loud whistling… Other fireworks sound include booming, buzzing, hissing, crackling, humming and more!” Read more…
Both night & day, the gemstones I select and set sound-off for themselves – igniting a “buzz” and eliciting enthusiastic, yet subtler than fireworks whistles of admiration.
Plus more: a display of these fiery pieces and additional designs can now be ordered online through PayPal and know that you may place your order even if you do not have your own PayPal account. THE GREAT AMERICAN QUILT CONTEST WINNER
O’ Beautiful
Left is my award-winning picture quilt that was featured in the January/February 1987 issue of Nissan Discovery “Quilts – Rebirth of an American Tradition” published in Fullerton, CA.
O’ Beautiful was also included in All Flags Flying: American Patriotic Quilts as Expressions of Liberty by Robert Charles Bishop. This book features a variety of antique quilts with patriotic themes, the fifty-one winners of the Great American Quilt Contest and a description the background of each quilt. Available from Amazon.
O’ beautiful, for spacious skies…inspired by a quilt made by my grandmother (a keepsake which will continue to be handed down within my family) over the course of 25 years, I became an internationally recognized master quilt maker.
A number of my quilts have won acclaim and awards. I am especially proud of the attention O’ Beautiful has received, as well as its honored place in the history of America.
In the feature article in the January/February 1987 issue of the Nissan Discovery publication, titled CRAZY ABOUT QUILTS, Robert G. Beason writes: “The Great American Quilt Festival, conducted by 3M as part of the Statue of Liberty celebrations (view 4th of July celebration), drew hundreds of entries…and the whole bunch went on tour. At the first nine venues they drew 3 million spectators.”
More from Beason’s article: “Vermont Governor Madeline Kunin who has a green-on-white Tree of Paradise Star on her statehouse office wall. “…I think quilts are absolutely fascinating. The patterns are a kind of history of our country.”
As a former resident of Kansas and a quilt maker, I used the colloquial phrase “gen it up” – gen as in generator. As a current resident of Arizona and a jewelry maker, I am phrasing it a bit differently – here I “gem it up”.
In jewelry, I incorporate designs and metalsmithing techniques that are drawn from my expertise in the fiber art world and “gem it up” by incorporating outstanding gemstones culled for their unique color and form.
More on my quilting background in relationship to my jewelry making techniques will be featured in an upcoming SPOTLIGHT on SUZANNE.
